'Tis The Season

Christmas is next week. I finally chose photos for our card and they have been mailed. I'm not finished shopping yet, but I mostly know what I'm going to buy. And did I mention that John turns 36 tomorrow?

But that's not the season I'm talking about.

If you have kids, you're firmly aware that cold and flu season is here. When one kid gets sick, what are the chances that the other kids will get it too? (Hint: 100%) What are the chances that one or both parents will also get struck down with whatever illness is floating around? (Hint: Slightly lower, but still high. Kids like to share germs.)

On Monday, Johnny had a vague cough that turned into a nasty sounding cough by that evening. Tuesday morning, he crawled into bed with me and said, "Mom? I'm SICK."

He certainly was. Sick enough that he lay down on the couch to watch a video, fell asleep, slept for an hour, and then continued to lie there listlessly for another two hours after that.

Johnny does not nap.

I was concerned because his Christmas party for school was Wednesday night and I didn't want him to miss it. I spent two days hollering, "Cover your mouth!" Maureen has been coughed on so many times, it's a given that she will eventually get sick.

Turns out he was fine, he was bouncing off the walls when I came home from work on Wednesday and my mom said, "Look who's recovered!" I wasn't sure about the nagging cough, but it didn't matter. Most of the other kids were running around with the same cough. And none of them were covering their mouths. Gotta love kids.

As for me, I've been coughed on too. And so far I feel fine. I'm waiting for it to hit. But as each day goes by, and I have no cough, a tiny spark of hope flares. Yes, there are thousands of viruses out there. But at some point, what are the chances that they will get something that I've already had? It has to happen some time, right?

Either that, or I'll stay healthy for the next week and THEN get sick. Just in time for Christmas.

'Tis the season!

Party Recap: I forgot my camera, so I have no pictures. But it was fun. The kids watched a puppet show based on a Nigerian fable about a selfish turtle. The kids liked the puppets, the adults like the turtle's Brooklyn accent. They ate cupcakes and drank punch. Half the three-year-old group sang a song about Santa while the other half sat there with stage fright. The four-year-old group sang two songs and each and every kid participated. And Johnny grinned the entire time. And before we left, he told one of his classmates 'Merry Christmas.' She smiled, then he leaned in and kissed her cheek! She told her mother, "Mommy, Johnny kissed me and I felt like a bride." Oh Lord.

I think I yell "COUGH INTO YOUR ELBOW" 9237458213 times a day. Seriously. Ew.

Someone told me their pediatrician said this was the worst year he could remember for nasty coughs that just last and last and don't seem to get much better. Oh goody for us.

I hope everyone stays healthy!
