Today, Johnny and I went on his first ever field trip. We went to a local farm and rode around in a wagon pulled by a tractor, picking veggies. Johnny had a blast and we came home with three bags of food, which took me forever to clean and sort after bedtime, and which are now scattered all over my kitchen counters to air dry.
We had a busy week last week and that meant that I didn't feel like cooking/didn't have time to cook, so we ate takeout twice. So I haven't made all the dishes on my last menu plan yet. This week's menu plan was going to be a "I cleaned out my kitchen cabinets and this is what I found" plan, but that's been changed to a "holy crap I have no idea what to do with turnips" menu plan. Coming soon.
For now, here are some photos.
We had a gorgeous fall day.
Before we got into the wagons, the kids played in a veggie stand that looked like a tractor.
The hay!
Mommy and Johnny.
After the farm, we went to a local park to eat lunch and play. Johnny went straight to the digging toy.

And here's what we brought home:
2 turnips with greens
1 pound carrots
a colander full of mixed beans (yellow wax beans, flat Roma green beans, and some sort of purple bean)
one large bunch curly parsley
one large bunch cilantro
one large bunch dill
2 pumpkins
9 large jalapeno peppers
2 smallish green bell peppers
7 large banana peppers
handful soy beans in pods
The pumpkins have been turned into fall decorations, but the rest will go into meals. I also had some pears from a coworker that were getting soft, so I made an apple/pear crisp that is out of this world, used a stale loaf of sourdough bread to make croutons, and whipped up a beer bread to go with some dip my husband made over the weekend.
I'm thinking roast vegetables as a side dish, three bean salad, and fresh salsa, and I'll probably chop and freeze most of the peppers to add to the collection already in there from my parent's garden. As for the turnip greens, does anyone know of a way to prepare them that makes them not slimy and gross?
What are you cooking this week? Do you have your pumpkins yet?

Johnny looks just like you in that picture of the two of you together. Good luck with all the produce. You are much more industrious than me. i am always in awe.
Looks like such fun! We got our pumpkins today, but I'm thinking I need more-the porch isn't full enough.
Okay, just finished catching up....the post about poison control got my attention...so glad everyone is alright!!!
So after nearly over a week of eating out my gut is completely out of whack, so I am trying to cook and eat stuff I make here, not all healthy, but I'm cooking...
Sunday, Lean Cuisine Butternut Squash ravioli (Yum, my absolute fave!)
Mon...Taco night
Tues...Sweet Potato Soup and Ciabatta Bread
Wed. working till 11 p.m, Ken will probably eat at his mom's
Thursday....Tilapia
Fri...Greek Pizza
Sat...Greek Take out(?)
I'm off tomorrow, so I'm buying, carving and roasting the seeds tomorrow. I love pumpkin seeds, they are not so good for my gut though!!!
We went to North Run Farm and Misty Farms to pick up our pumpkins. I love that you actually feel enough out of the city that you feel somewhat in the "country" there. We didn't finish the corn mazes (1-2 miles long!) but we got some amazing pumpkins.
I love love LOVE the fall.
I whipped up a large pot of maryland crab soup on sunday and now my legs are recovering from the 5k I ran on Sunday. Today is our wedding anniversary so I will be treated to a meal that I won't have to cook!
The rest of the week is undecided but perhaps some tilapia, rice, and veggies, peppers stuffed with rice and turkey sausage.
