Next month, my husband is going to Mexico for work. For five days. I'm staying here with the kids.
I'm sure it will be a challenge, but I'm also looking forward to it a little, and have started making plans.
I've had a number of things on my To Do list that I haven't attempted because of lack of time. I can't really start cleaning out my basement during the day, because the kids need me. And after dinner, baths and bedtime, I want to spend time with my H or checking my blog comments and catching up on what my bloggy friends are doing.
So while he is gone, here's what I'm going to do:
Hog the bed. Sometimes a girl just wants to stretch out, yanno?
Give myself a break from cooking. I'll (hopefully) be posting ideas for quick, easy and healthy meals for one or two.
Visit with people we don't get to see often. One of my best mom friends is moving to Southern PA in early August. Maybe if they are unpacked enough and in need of company, we'll take a daytrip up there to see the new house and let the kids play.
Go to the pool. Nothing wears them out before bedtime like the pool. And if I don't have to come home and cook dinner, no need to hurry back to the house.
Clean out the basement. We already have a bulk trash pick up scheduled for that week. Anyone who wants to come over and help me carry a hugely heavy filing cabinet up my basement stairs, I would sooo appreciate it. Because I want the damn thing gone already, and I can't promise I won't attempt to do it myself and rupture something if no one volunteers.
Add music to my iPod. I got it for Christmas last year and still have a huge pile of CD's to transfer. Something to do to fill those hours between the kids going to bed and my own bedtime.
Go to bed early. At least, earlier than usual. Faced with the prospect of no 6PM backup, I need to get my butt in bed before midnight.
What do you do when your spouse is away on business?

Dh doesn't go away on on business, but half the week I feel like a single parent. He works 12 hour night shifts and sleeps all day long. Before Noah came nighttime was my time. The kids go to bed at 7 pm and I had the rest of the night to myself. I spent time online, caught up on my reading, knitting, scrapbooking stuff. Cleaned with no interruptions. Caught up with some phone calls to friends. Now I spend that time nursing the baby and trying to get him to go to bed so I can go to bed. Have fun and good luck!
I carry on as usual, having the H gone is nothing new around here. Although, now that we've gotten used to him being home, it'll be a little different. I'd like to say I catch up an all kinds of stuff. I'd love to spend the time scrapbooking because I'm SOOOOOO behind. But I usually stay up WAY later than usual, which is goofy because I have to get the kids up by myslef in the morning. I usually just mess around on the computer or read.
My husband doesn't go away on business anymore but he does work evenings and nights so there are entire days (sometimes 3 or 4 in a row where we don't see him). I usually make plans to see my parents, go to the pool or the park, pretty much anything I can think of to keep the kids busy and out of the house because they behave better when they are engaged than when we're just hanging out here. I also make plans to do stuff we wouldn't normally do, like eat McDonalds, which my son will tell you makes you fat and sick if you eat too much of it. Mostly, I try to make nights when my husband isn't around like a special date with my boys where we do fun stuff so that they are busy having fun and not thinking about Daddy not being there with them.
When I was little and my dad was away we got to things we didn't when he was here...my mom would buy sugar cereal for us, we could watch a little extra television (we weren't allowed to watch much to start with) and my mom was a little more loose with the bedtime.
Not that my dad was fussy about any of that, but he went to work very early in the morning so I think that sleep was a priority. Sugar cereals were verboten normally, but once in awhile, as a treat we had them, and when we did...oh boy...so good!!!
When Ken has been away I just watch what I want on tv, sleep diagonal in bed and generally am a little more slovenly!!
I kow you'll have fun, is he going somewhere good in Mexico? Somewhere you would like to go???
After my little kick to the gut experience:
I would ABSOLUTELY hog the bed!!
Have fun with your projects! Can't wait to here how your week goes!
My Dh travels for work a few times a month, so we have a good routine down. I do cook less when he's gone, but the house is usually cleaner because I spend less time hanging out with him and more time doing what I should be doing anyway :)
I'm stricter with bedtime and routines when DH is home vs when he's away.
Since Scott stays home, he doesn't go on business trips- but I'll tell you, when I go on business trips, I go to bed early to get as much sleep as possible (8pm!) and take a bubble bath. :) I wouldn't know what to do with myself or the kids if Scott left for a few days.
