Happy Birthday, America!
What did you do today? Cook out? Drink beer? Garden? Swim? Shoot off fireworks? Hang out with family and friends?
Sounds good to me!
We stayed close to home because our proximity to downtown makes our neighborhood prime parking for people interested in taking the water taxi to see the fireworks at the Inner Harbor. We learned our lesson after a few years of bringing the kids home for bedtime and not having any place to park. So we stay put on the Fourth. I hit the grocery store early enough to still be able to park and did some miscellaneous things to get ready for vacation. We had steak, corn on the cob, sliced melon, salads and summer squash cooked in butter and garlic for dinner.
After the kids went to bed, I went out to check on my flowers and also did a vast amount of weeding. Here's how things are growing in our yard!
This is a ground cover that John put in as a border. It's flourishing nicely.
Black-eyed susans.
Remember this butterfly bush with the monarch butterfly on it? Look how much it grew!
Petunias in my fence pots.
Vincas in the fence pots.
My container plants out front. Look how much they grew from when Johnny and I planted them in May! (You can also see the butterfly bush and the raspberry plant in the background of these pictures taken in May. Unfortunately, the weeds are growing just as fast as the other stuff.)
The pansies were getting weedy looking, so I pulled out the worst ones and replaced them with more petunias.
Marigolds. I used to really hate marigolds, but then I learned how incredibly easy they are to grow. Instant impact! You can see one of the plant flags in the background. There are two of the original three remaining. I have to buy new ones just about every year. Seriously, who steals flags?
Happy Fourth of July!

Nothing wrong with staying put on the 4th!! We go to a neighborhood party instead of the big bash downtown...too many people down there!
The flowers all look great! Hasn't it been a great year for growing???
I love your flowers!
We had a neighborhood water fight followed by a potluck BBQ and then amateur fireworks. It was so much fun, I hope we make it a tradition.
WOW! They look great. Nice job.
Anyone stealing flags has some issues...ugh!
Very nice flowers/plants.
