Unplugged Project: A Summertime Classic

Today was just one of those days that started badly and got worse as the hours went on. When Mom doesn't sleep well and the kids wake up super early and it's Mother of God hot outside, bad things happen. When the boy had been sent to his room for the fourth time before noon and my husband emailed me to say he had a dinner after work to go to, I knew today was going to be one of those days during which I'm close to tears from the frustration.

I've really been wanting to participate in the weekly unplugged projects, but we've been pretty busy with playdates and activities, and up until the last few days, the weather has been great. Plus, last week my husband put the tin cans I had been saving to make a windowsill herb garden with into the recycle.

The latest theme is sticky, so I had planned on making carrot snails with Johnny during Maureen's naptime. Get it? Snails=snail slime=sticky. Yes, I know, it's a stretch. But I spotted this activity in a magazine ages ago, tore the page out, added it to my Folder of Fun, and have been trying to remember to buy full-size carrots ever since then. Basically, you place long strips of carrot peels in ice cold water and they're supposed to curl up. Then you use cream cheese to add peas for eyes and additional pieces of carrot for antenna, and voila! Carrot snails. Except that the whole curling up thing didn't work as well as pictured and I ended up messing around with toothpicks and ice cubes and stuff and we never got to the eyes and antenna part. I'll be posting about the carrot snails soon, but it was a dismal failure as far as our sticky project went.

Neither kid went for the Herbaceous Beef Burgers I made for dinner, although I thought they were fantastic. After Maureen tossed her cantaloupe on the floor and declared, "It's NOT!" I decided we had to get out of the house, heat or no heat. It turned into the perfect opportunity for some sticky.

I told you it was hot. This was at 6PM. Earlier in the day, it was 103, not counting the heat index, and humid.

In search of cool, we hit the snowball stand. When I asked Johnny what kind he wanted, he told me "an orange one." So here he is eating a mango snowball.
It didn't take long for our first spill.
"Whadaya mean, don't scoop it off the table and eat it with my fingers?"
Maureen wasn't interested in eating any, but she did want to sit on my lap, hold my spoon and feed my watermelon snowball to me. Her motor skills are pretty advanced and she never misses her own mouth, but she did miss mine a couple of time, sending icy, sticky snowball down my leg and into my sandal.

All gone!

By the time we were finished, all three of us were sugary and sticky and ready for the bath. But you know what? I felt a lot better.

We stopped by Rita's on the way home from work tonight for a treat, totally ruining the kids dinner, but who cares? Gabe got a vanilla soft serve cone and I got a Georgia Peach Italian Ice. Kylie was mooching off both of us from the second they were in our hands! It did kinda ruin her appetite for dinner tonight, but Gabe ate like a champ. Paul wasn't home so I could make one of my favorites that he refuses to eat - Hawaiian Chicken. Gabe ate an entire chicken breast! He Never eats that much!! And apparently I buttered him up with the ice cream, because he was a super helper around the house, cleaning up Kylie's mess from this morning, and putting all her toys away in her new toy box! WWO! Not a bad night considering we were minus Daddy!

Gotta love the snowcones when it's +100*! Love the picture of your son, "What do you mean?"

I love those pictures, especially the one of your little girl feeding you snow cone. Very cute!

It's too bad it is so hot there. I guess you got sticky without much effort. Sorry about the snails. If you get it to work, please post a picture, I have not seen that before.

Thanks again for joining in despite your bad day! I hope tomorrow is better.

What a day! But you survived:) Good call on the snowball stand. A little "ice cream" always makes the day better.

I miss Rita's. When we lived in Cape St. Claire our Rita's was just across the street from our house. There isn't anything that comes even close down here.
