Baltimore Tourist

Gas prices are reaching record highs and it's only expected to get worse this summer. It's so bad that some families are limiting or even canceling their vacation plans.

I don't want to spend too much money on gas, but I also don't want to stay at home for an entire, hot summer with two bored and grouchy kids. And we can only go to the library or the pool so many times before those activities lose their appeal.

When I thought about it, I realized that we really don't have to go far to find things to do, because we're lucky enough to live in a city with a rich history and plenty of attractions. I've lived in Maryland all my life and in Baltimore City for six years, but there are places I haven't been to in years and things I've never seen.

We've been to the B&O Railroad Museum recently, boarded the Pride of Baltimore II, and went sailing on the Clipper City. We went to Fort McHenry when Maureen was a baby, and we've been on the Maritime Tour not once, but twice. However, I haven't been to the Top of The World Observation Deck since I was a kid, and the same goes for the Edgar Allen Poe House, the USS Constellation and the Science Center. I've never been on the Fells Point Ghost Tour, or to the American Visionary Art Museum or Port Discovery.

So this summer, my goal is to be a tourist in my own city and check out some of these attractions. And although we've been inside Fort McHenry recently, I plan on going back because it's free to use the grounds outside the fort. A wide open, safe place to let the kids run around, fly kites and have a picnic sounds good to me!

I'd also like to see more of the Civil War Trail Markers and visit some of the city's famous restaurants.

Could you be a tourist in your own town? And if you're familiar with the Baltimore area, share with me your favorite spots to go. I'm looking for both free attractions and those with entrance fees, those I can do during the week with my kids, and things to do on weekends when my husband is home. And if you have a restaurant that we must check out, be sure to leave a comment!

I don't have any suggestions, but you can bet I'll be stealing yours this summer! Good plans!

you hit all the big Baltimore places, except for the aquarium. We plan ov visiting the neighboring city of Washington DC this summer. You can take the Metor down and save on gas. And entrance to most, if not all, of the Simthsonian Museums, and the Washington Zoo is free. I really want to take the kids to the Air and Space Museum, and the Museun of Natural History I know Gabe will LOVE the airplanes and dinosaurs. And we did the WAshington Zoo last fall, and plan to do it again this year. It's HUGE! you can easily spend an entire day there, and the kids loved it!

There are always a lot of great ethnic festivals around town - I love them and they're usually inexpensive and have great food. We've been going to a lot of the Perry Hall activities- free, close to home and a lot of fun. The Perry Hall fair is coming up in early July and has a petting zoo and a lot of fun stuff for kids.

We just came back from the science center and it was awesome. It was practically a ghost town and we had a terrific time. I was planning to write a post about it later with some pictures.
