Apathy

Johnny is in the dining room, dumping the Little People box onto a pile of matchbox cars. I'm pretty sure his train tracks will be next.

Maureen is in the kitchen, scattering pots and pan across the floor. I can tell from the speculative look on her face that she's thinking about dumping the cat bowl over.

Last Tuesday, I figured it had been warm enough for long enough that it might be safe to take the kids to the children's program at the library again. We stay away during the winter, because half the kids there have colds and the other half are getting them. Bad move on my part, because both kids now have runny noses. Maureen has been whining at me all day and Johnny has been tuning out every word I say.

It's raining. Still. It has been raining for approximately 52309987622 days now and I'm dying for some sunshine. I decided I wasn't up to watching The Aristocats again, so put in Seabiscuit instead. Now I'm envying my brother and sister-in-law. Their baby might be up a lot at night and need to eat every 47 minutes, but at least they can sit and watch TV without loudly saying, "LALALALALALALALALALA! LOOK AT THE HORSE!" every time someone on the screen says a bad word. Sure, Johnny likes the horses, but I would prefer he not learn the phrase "son of a bitch."

The good news is that I have no idea where the cat is and he hasn't been around to bite me all day.

Seriously. Yesterday was Mother's Day, and that's generally when it's considered safe to start working in your garden. Except that it's still pouring, it's maybe 50 degrees outside and I turned on the heat because I'm freezing and all my sweaters are stored in the basement. Those 90 degree days totally fooled me. It's too cold and the rain is too relentless to even consider a puddle jumping walk.

The cat just showed up and Johnny is poking him with the broom. Maureen has moved on to throwing shoes around the living room. I can't bring myself to care. At some point, I'll have to heave myself off the couch and go start dinner, because no matter how hard I wish for it, the chicken won't cook itself.

Ugh. Sunshine? Spring?

Please?
