I had my carpets and couch cleaned today, because they desperately needed it and I really didn't want to do it myself. So I searched around and found myself a really good deal, and it was totally worth the time it saved me.
Anyway, the time range they gave me for the technician to show was 9AM to noon, which meant that I had to be up and dressed before he got here. I got up at 830 and took a shower. Johnny got up at 9, and while he ate breakfast, I moved furniture and piled stuff on the bed. Then I cleaned the bathroom. By the time Maureen got up at 10, my housework for the day was mostly finished and I was dressed.
Being able to take a shower in peace and get a head start on my chores made all the difference in how smoothly my day went. I feel so much more relaxed and instead of being focused on what I need to get done, I've been able to enjoy playing with my kids more.
(I wouldn't, however, recommend scheduling a carpet cleaning for a rainy day, although, in my defense, there was no rain forecast when I made the appointment. And my couch and chair and carpet look great. We're just stuck on the first floor on the house with nowhere to sit.)
One of my best friends can't even comprehend starting her day with her kids until she's had a cup of very strong coffee. Another rises at 6AM so she can have uninterrupted blogging time before getting her kids off to school. I don't drink coffee and there are very few things that will get me out of bed at 6AM. But today went so well that I might have to actually start using my alarm clock instead of letting my kids wake me up.
How about you? What is essential for you to start the day?

Oh my God, what I could get done if my kids would sleep past 6! I start my day every day at 5:15 (unless my husband is home on the weekend and lets me sleep in a little). I need to brush my teeth to feel human in the morning. I don't care how loud my kids are screaming, I'm not getting them out of their rooms until I've at least brushed my teeth.
Your kids sleep until 9 and 10?! Even when we are not in school/working, that never happened here. My 13 year old would sleep all day, but that is to be expected.
Anyway, I get up at 4:15am, read my e-mail, blog and then run/workout all before anyone else gets up at 6:15. Of course, I will also be in bed by 9pm.
Coffee.. must have coffee. If I don't have it within the first hour I find myself horizontal again and wondering how to muster the strength to make a pot so it must be done right away. That being said, I don't need anything badly enough to drag myself out of bed before my 7am wake up call.
I'm a night owl and I hate mornings. So I'm tickled pink that my kids both sleep later than usual.
Of course, Johnny doesn;t nap and he sleeps late because he fights bedtime and it's usually approaching ten before he finally gives up and falls asleep.
And Maureen is usually up earlier, but last night she was awake in her bed for at least an hour, talking to her baby doll and banging her pacifier on her crib.
I'm enjoying it while I can, because they'll both be in school soon enough.
I must watch the Weather Channel for Local on the 8's, then I get right in the shower and then have to have CNN or Fox News on until I leave for work.
