Craving Sugar

There is no soda in the house and no chocolate. And I am struggling--mightily--with the urge to run to the store for some of each. It's not so much the caffeine, because I slept pretty well last night and I'm not working today. It's the sugar, the sweetness. My tastebuds are tingling and every cell in my body is crying out. "We need sugar! Please!"

I've been trying to stay distracted. I did two loads of laundry, cleaned the bathroom, swept the floor, clipped Jameson's nails and gave Maureen a bath. I made another menu plan and grocery list and pulled out bills to pay. I dug out a pile of Pampers stickers to enter into the Pampers Points program and painstakingly entered the ridiculously long codes into the form. I ran the dishwasher.

And yet...in the back of my mind, there's a voice saying, "If you go change you clothes now and pay bills while Maureen is sleeping, then you can feed her when she wakes up and then head straight to the store."

My motivating reasons are strong. My dentist and my wallet would certainly agree. But my will power is weak and my addiction is strong. What makes it worse is that I actually DO need to go to the store for groceries. And I'm out of makeup, so unless I go buy more, I'll be going to the Pogues concert tonight looking like a hag. So if I'm already in the store, it'll be even more difficult to bypass the junk.

I'd love to know, any of you who kicked a caffeine habit or a sugar habit, how did you do it and how long did it take?

In other news, Maureen saw her doctor yesterday for her fifteen month wellbaby visit.

She weighs 18.75 pounds, which is not on the chart, but she gained a pound since her last visit and is tracking fine. She is 29 inches tall, which is 25th percentile, and her head circumference is 50th percentile. Her blocked tear duct is resolved, she's meeting all her milestones just fine, and is healthy. Her skin is very dry, so the doctor gave me a cream to help with that, and she's also getting four enormous teeth at a time. So she's been a little cranky. She received two vaccines and goes back in three months. I also weighed Johnny while we were there, and he weights 31 pounds with his shoes on.

I was able to quit the sugar so much when I made myself sick on a large bag of smarties.

Short of that, I don't know what to tell you.

Set a goal of quitting sugar in say 3 months and pick a nice reward for yourself, something you want but wouldn't just run out and get normally. Then start with small goals like going 2 days without surgar and reward yourself with something small like downloading a new song to your ipod. Then gradually increase the length of time you go between rewards. The longer you go without the sugar the less you will crave it. I did this before I got married. There was a really awesome pair of pants in the window at Banana Republic that I fell in love with and I gave myself 12 weeks to lose some weight and stay away from all the crappy stuff I liked to eat. At the end of the 12 weeks I'd accomplished my goal and went in to buy the pants. They were obscenely expensive and I couldn't bring myself to spend $80 on a pair of pants but I was still really proud of my accomplishment and I think I bought new shoes or something instead that cost less. Anyway, although I've gained back any weight I lost and then some, I eat far better than I used to before I got married. My other suggestion would be to keep some grapes or other small fruit around and anytime you're craving sugar pop something naturally sweet and good for you in your mouth to satsify the craving. Good Luck! If anyone can do it, you can!

Wow what a woman. I have to have my chocolate. I do however only buy the little chocolate kisses or something individually wrapped and I also freeze them. When you try and eat frozen chocolate, it takes longer and you feel like you are getting more. I would say don't quit completely. Just limit yourself. Give it one little miniture candy a day and see if you can live with that. Also, I have heard that bananas cut your sweet tooth.

I gave up caffeine for lent and just did it. I had a decent substitute though... caf-free diet coke. It may have been harder to just stop drinking soda period. After lent I never started drinking caffeine again. My caffeine came from soda only, so it may be lower than coffee! Cinamon gum helped cut cravings when I quit smoking. Maybe a sugar-free gum would help?

I saw the Pogues open for U2 in 1992 (I think) HAVE FUN!

Sugar AND Caffeine at once??? You're a much better person than I am!!! I'll be honest- I don't have a problem kicking sugar (as long as I can have a substitute - like food sweetened with Splenda). But I also don't have that much of a sweet tooth (when I'm not pregnant). The caffeine would be much harder for me. It's funny- when I'm PG, it's no problem to quit the caffeine- but I think it's not hard knowing that there will be a Mountain Dew waiting for me in the delivery room!!! GOOD LUCK!
