Today was our first visit to our pediatrician's new office. It's three blocks away, in a brand new building, and I was pleased to find that my double wide jogger fits through the doorways. The practice has separate waiting areas for each of the specialties, and the pede's area was outfitted with brand new childsize tables and chairs and some nice wooden toys. Plus, the magazines were not only a good mixture of parenting and non-parenting related topics, they were also current issues, instead of one tattered copy of People from six months ago. The area where the nurses weigh and temp the kids was nice and open and tastefully decorated.
Maureen was there for her one year wellbaby visit, and Johnny was getting a flu shot.
Johnny did well. He has gained a pound and a half since September, and he took his shot like a champ. His eyes widened a little when the nurse stuck him with the needle and he gasped a little, but that was it.
Maureen did well too. She cried, but I can't say I blame her. She received four vaccines and had blood drawn for a lead level. Her head circumference and her height (28 inches) are normal, but she fell off the growth chart, weight wise. She weighs 16 pounds, 12 ounces, which is exactly what she weighed the last time I took her to the doctor. Since then, she has started to crawl more and is standing, so it makes sense that she's burning more calories. Since she's a great eater, we just need to feed her more calorie dense foods. The doctor recommended instant breakfast in her milk, and foods like pudding, extra pasta, eggs, and extra cheese, all foods which she loves.
I'm not really all that concerned, because we went through this same thing with Johnny. His was partially related to a food allergy, but the allergy is cleared up now and he's still small for his age. Since John and I are not large people, I can only assume there are some genetic tendencies at work here too. She is meeting her milestones and she's happy and pleasant, and my instinct says that she is fine.
Unfortunately, her eye is infected again, so we'll be going to see a pediatric eye specialist to talk about surgically opening her clogged tear duct. I'm pretty sure it's a procedure they do under anesthesia, and I'm not crazy about that, but we'll deal with that when we get there.

My cousin's daughter had to have her tear ducts opened, as well, around Maureen's age. We were all very concerned and nervous with the surgery- but she did exceptionally well and honestly, I think my cousin was more upset before, during and after than her daughter! Hopefully she won't need surgery but if she does it shouldn't be too bad. Good luck!
I was underweight as well and while it had nothing to do with genetics and everything to do with my eating habits, my mom did a sneaky something I think I've mentioned here before. She added a raw egg to my chocolate instant breakfast. Never the wiser, I still did not gain weight, I was always lanky until about 30 and then it was like someone hit the brakes on my metabolism...now what I wouldn't give to be in shape...New Years Resolution #1.
Gosh, that's not fun--hope they can fix it easily without too much discomfort for her.
I hope her eye can be fixed without surgery if possible.
