Mama's Got A Brand New 'Do! It's been a long time since I last had a haircut. I wanted to wait until I stopped the postpartum shedding, and then between doctor's appointments, vacation, et cetera, I never managed to get in. Then after I saw a picture of John and I taken at Johnny's birthday party, I realized exactly how tragic my hair was. I've been following the same stylist around for years, but she's not good at making suggestions for different styles. Instead, I went to the salon where I had my hair done in May for my friend Allison's wedding. It cost three times what I was used to paying, but it was totally worth it. The stylist took a look at the shape of my face and the texture of my hair, as well as the fact that I have two little kids at home and not a lot of time to spend on creating a hairstyle. I ended up with a layered cut that looks like a blunt cut, and she did something different with my bangs. She kept most of the length, but she also whacked off a lot of the damaged part. I had a moment of sheer panic when a piece of hair six inches long landed in my lap. The overall effect is going to take some getting used to, but I don't feel like a frump anymore.
Follow The Directions I come from a family that tends to eschew directions in favor of winging it. My brother is well known for putting together furniture the way he thinks it's supposed to go, and only looking at the directions when he's already screwed something up. On Tuesday, I made Chicken With Creamy Jalapeno Sauce for dinner. I'm not a fan of hot stuff, it bothers my stomach, so I usually avoid it, but John loves spicy food. I figured I could eat my chicken without sauce or pick the peppers out. However, I ignored the part of the recipe that said to wear gloves while seeding and chopping the pepper, even though I washed my hands really well. Normal hand soap, it turns out, doesn't remove pepper oils, because when I rubbed my eye, it started to hurt. I removed my contact lens so I could rinse my eye out and that made it even worse. Finally, I used rubbing alcohol on the tips of my fingers to cut the oil, but I had to wear my glasses to work and throw my contacts out. I knew there was a reason I don't like peppers. Also, I discovered I've been using my Baby Bjorn incorrectly for the past three years. An ad for BabiesRUs came in the mail and the Bjorn is on sale and I noticed that the front facing baby in the picture was strapped in differently than I had been doing and sure enough, when I looked at mine..."Oh. Oops." Maureen hates the new way, by the way, because it means she can't fling her arms around like a maniac.
Mama's Also Got A New Car Sort of. The Sienna is in the body shop having the damage inflicted by our neighbor fixed, and his insurance is paying for a rental car for the week the repairs are taking. It's a Chevy Impala and I hate it. Maureen's seat doesn't fit in it either because of the way the seatbelts are, so I'm also stuck at home during the day until I get my van back. I miss my van.

where did you go for your haircut? I just tried a new place and kind of liked it... but I'm not sold.
Well its kind of convoluted how i stumbled over your site, my sister got me blogging because she lives in DC and I really had never known anyone who had done it so after she started hers I wanted to do one too. I was afraid that it was like myspace which weirds me out...but I started clicking that next blog button one day just to see what people wrote about and what it was like. Well of course there is some trash, but then I found lots of sites that I liked and then your site and I loved how you wrote about food and your kids and your adventures. So, that's it, hope its not weird...I really appreciate how you write about real life so honestly. Its great reading, all my favorite blogs are what keep me from watching tv.
