Today was Day 2 of the East Coast heat wave, with temperatures downtown topping 100 degrees. That's not even with the heat index.
Baltimore City had a Code Red Ozone Alert, which means that the air quality is bad, and you should stay inside if you can.
Being stuck inside with an energetic almost three-year-old is misery! He's bored. I'm bored. We can only run so many relay drills with Linkadoos before he loses interest. It's too hot to cook something. I can only read about Thomas the Tank Engine so many times in a row before I want to bang my head on the floor.

Today Johnny needed a diaper change, so I stuck Maureen in her bouncy seat so I could clean Johnny up. When he was finished, I put him on the floor and went to wash my hands, only to hear Maureen wailing furiously. When I went to investigate, Johnny was nowhere to be seen, and Maureen was in her seat, beet red, crying her head off.
No wonder. She had a nice bite mark on her leg! Johnny bit her!
He didn't break the skin, but he left tooth impressions in her skin, and went they faded, she still had bruising. He got a major time out.
After her nap, I was changing her and spotted another bite mark on her arm! I was so shocked and upset. Since when did Johnny become a biter? He's been so great with Maureen.
I think part of the problem is that he's bored, and he's also getting his two year molars, so maybe he just needed something to chomp down on, however inappropriate.
One of my coworkers said that her son bit her once and she bit him back. He never did it again. I just can't bring myself to do it though. Punish him for biting by...biting? We already have to say please and excuse me to the cat so Johnny doesn't shove Jameson off chairs. So I feel like if I were to bite him, besides the fact that it would make me feel bad to hurt him, his toddler mind would think that if Mommy can do it, Johnny can do it too. That's one of the many reasons why we don't spank. We've worked hard to teach him not to hit, I don't want to undo all that effort.
So tomorrow is supposed to be really hot too, but we're going somewhere--anywhere--so he can run off some of his energy. In the meantime, he's not even allowed to sit next to Maureen unless someone is within arms reach to intervene should he feel the need to sink his fangs in again.

Don't bite him back. Collin went through an aweful biting phase where, although he didn't bite other children, I got bit a lot when he was mad. I tried everything I could think of to get him to stop, including biting him back. The first time I did it, I didn't do it hard enough to hurt him and he laughed at me! The next time I tried it, he sobbed and sobbed and I felt horrible. I cried too and then I appologize and explained that I wanted him to understand that biting hurt. That didn't help either. Eventually, after enough time outs, he got to picture that biting is not acceptable. I don't think it was worth the emotional trauma for either one of us.
I agree with the don't bit back. I doubt it will solve the biting issue.
It may work by keeping him from Maureen unattended.
He loves his little sister and likes to be with her. If he knows he [i]can't[/] be unattended with her and realizes that he now has limited time with her due to biting her it may work.
I don't know well reasoning with him (at his) would work. I am sure he did not due it with malice.
I am sure he would not like being bitten himself!

Taryn tends to bite things & occasionally people when she's teething. Maybe his teeth hurt?
I definately wouldn't bite him back!

This cracked me up! I too have an awful biter- he only bites Scott and I but leaves some serious teeth marks. He even pulled up skin on me the other day. He gets Scott on the head, stomach... he even tried for the worst place a guy can imagine getting bitten. !?! My kid is vicious!
